I’m inclined to agree with the comment above me that you just need drivers. The most common cause is the selection of the wrong – typically the modem – device as the default instead of the sound card. First attempts at fixing were the basic uninstall of the driver to have Windows reinstall. CNET’s Forum on Windows Vista is the best source for finding help or troubleshooting advice from a community of experts. I download Sigma Tel audio driver and got back with sound. My kid is home from LSU with a laptop with no sound. Advertisements or commercial links. The issue and most likely solution has not changed much since or dll, when I first encountered it as a novice. This time it worked!
That really worked for me. We went to the Dell website and downloaded the audio driver, but still nothing. In Device manager it was shown with a red X and that told Windows not to use it and not care about the drivers. No Audio Output Device is installed how do i solve this problem and regain access to sound on my laptop?

Of course, make sure you don’t need the modem or if you do, troubleshoot inspjron that while not affecting the audio. All of these things may – in some cases they apparently do not – result in correction of the basic problem by forcing the correct selection of the default device.
Next attempt was running the Dell diagnostics CD. I no longer have the ability to use the modem or maybe it would work if I troubleshot a little further but since it has been years since I used a modem I didn’t bother trying. In any case, things appear back to normal now. You two,tbarron7 and Jflynn33, are lifesavers. Control Panel, then click: Make sure that “Laptop Stereo Speakers” is selected.

I booted from the CD and audio tested perfectly fine in the diagnostics environment. May 31, 4: I too lost audio when I reinstalled Vista Premium.

Your fix worked great. In other Win OS setups reboot may be required. I know you mentioned this, but try visiting the Dell site and installing the updated audio driver for your particular model. Sexually explicit or offensive language Spam: When I went to Xound Manager, it showed that the latest drivers had been installed and that the audio was working fine.
Up to Windows XP this was called “disable in current hardware profile”. Your “safeguards” simply keep the computer from working! Even before the recommended reboot the audio started working again.
Let us mess with our computers a little! I did exactly what you said and my audio returned as soon as I had deleted the modem driver. I downloaded some stupid audio update for vista. Sigmatel driver from Dell didn’t help. May I buy you a drink MR Grif. Thank you for helping us maintain Sounr great community.
